When Professors go and "Hike the Appalachian Trail"

I'm not going to comment too much about this news story (I might take questions in the comments, but I really can't comment too much on it), but I will provide the link to the news story, and let you go and read it yourselves.

Wow, just wow.

This is one of those things that doesn't happen too often, but when it does...wow. I will say that not too many people in the department were surprised that this happened to him. It is sure to become a department legend, and will be recounted by graduate students when they leave and go work other places. The one upside is that I now have at least one legendary story to tell about my time in grad school.

  1. Man that is incredible!  Yep, it is amazing how many famous people get in trouble "hiking tha Appalachian Trail". :)

  2. In case you don't know, "hiking the Appalachian trail" is a reference to a former governor of South Carolina, who claimed he was out "hiking the Appalachian trail" and was later found in Argentina with his mistress.

For a while the graduate students here at UNC knew Dr. Frampton had been arrested, but we didn't know what for, so the standard assumption was that he was "hiking the Appalachian trail" and something went wrong (i.e. she turned out to be a minor) and he got arrested. Some of us were relieved that it was only drug charges (yeah, only drug charges), and not something that would get him dumped in the Argentine federal prison on Medoza. Though there were other grad students who literally cheered when they heard he had been arrested. So I can't say he was too popular around here, even if he has published 400+ papers in his career.

  4. Wow, that's crazy! I'll be sure to steer clear of the Appalachian trail. It seems to be a troublesome trail to hike.

  5. That sure beats the physicist and the chloroformed cat in the bell tower keyboard story.
