In almost all sports there is some level of technically illegal contact that regularly occurs. In football defensive backs and receivers commonly bump, grab, and push each other. In basketball the line between a charge and a blocking foul is razor thin. In soccer there are some hard tackles and even the occasional hand to the face or gut. All of this, however, is put to shame by this clip from a women's soccer game between BYU and New Mexico.
So as it turns out BYU athletics might not be as saintly as originally thought. Next time you play soccer at BYU (or New Mexico for that matter), wear a helmet and wrap yourself in bubble wrap.
"Next time you play soccer at BYU (or New Mexico for that matter)"? Based on this video, I'd switch those. It's the UNM player who's pulling dirty play after dirty play. One elbow by a BYU player, then repeated offenses by the UNM player.

ReplyDeleteYou bring up an interesting point, but in this case the players were college athletes, which means that they cannot be paid, except for a scholarship that covers their tuition and very basic cost of living. Some collegiate athletes in some of the more popular sports can go on to make a lot of money in professional leagues, but as far as I know there isn't even a professional women's soccer league in the US.
Essentially what I'm trying to say is that in this case money was certainly not the root of the problem.

ReplyDeleteA problem of testosterone may be, but it is true that this is funny (even if it is cruel) to see some women acting like this, even more without the motivation of money.
ReplyDeleteNonetheless aggressiveness is not only a problem of testosterone but as well of psychology, because the ability to control a same impulse of testosterone is not equal for everybody, as for controlling pain for a warrior.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if the BYU player was given any punishment (i.e. being kicked out of the game (kicked out HA HA!)), but the New Mexico player was suspended indefinitely from college sports.

ReplyDeleteI heard about this. She definitely should be suspended but I think indefinitely from college sports is a little harsh.
I think if it were up to me I would suspend her for the rest of the season but let her come back next year if she can show she has improved.
