National Research Council Rankings Coming Soon

The long delayed latest edition of the National Research Council's Assessment of Research-Doctorate Programs" (aka grad school rankings that actually mean something) are nearing release. Today the NRC released "A Guide to the Methodology of National Research Council Assessment of the Doctorate Programs" which outlines how data was collected and how it will be used to create the rankings. This has apparently been the major hold-up in getting the rankings out, so they should be coming soon (before September according to the Wikipedia).

The ratings will be broken down by field and sub-field. For physics those sub-fields are: Astronomy and Astrophysics; Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics; Biological and Chemical Physics; Condensed Matter Physics; Cosmology, Relativity, and Gravity; Elementary Particles and Fields and String Theory; Engineering Physics; Fluid Dynamics; Non-linear Dynamics; Nuclear; Optics; Plasma and Beam Physics; Quantum Physics. Interestingly, there is also an Astrophysics and Astronomy category with sub-fields: Physical Processes; Instrumentation; The Sun and the Solar System; Stars, Interstellar Medium, and the Galaxy; External Galaxies; Cosmology.
