Graduate School in North Carolina

Yesterday I was notified that University of North Carolina--Chapel Hill would be accepting me for graduate school. (I won't talk about the schools that rejected me, I mean it's not like I pinned the rejection letters to the message board in my apartment and threw knives at them...) So now I have to figure out how to move to North Carolina.

UNC is a good school with a good reputation. It is also part of the "University Triangle" which consists of Duke University, UNC and North Carolina State. They also have the Triangle University Nuclear Laboratory. Even though I won't be doing Nuclear research it is a major center for physics research (and funding!). There are several professors there that do work in Astrophysics and Theoretical Physics which is what I want to do. There are even two professors that focus on galactic dynamics, which is something I am particularly interested in.

So I will be heading out next fall to start graduate work at UNC.

  1. Congratulations Ryan. I lived in North Carolina for a couple years and liked it. However, the humidity of the south is terrible. :(

With that said, I wish you the best.

  2. "part of the "University Triangle""

Ryan, I really think this is a big plus. It's so good to be next to a lot of good stuff going on.

For example, UCSB is having their annual theoretical seminars, and the speakers are taking time out to come here to give talks to. It's great!

Also, it looks like they have a good size astrophysics group, so I'm sure there will be a lot of good things to choose from if astrophysics is for you.

    Again, congratulations.

  3. Congratulations! North Carolina is a good school and they have a lot of great research programs. I have a good friend in dental school there who is engaged to a grad student at UNC in biochemistry. They both love it.

I have to add an amen to what Joe said about it nice being in an area with other research institutions. Boulder has the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) which hosts most federal solar research and the Southwest Research Institute - a not-for-profit research institute that focuses on solar and space physics. This means that Boulder is a major hub of solar physics and we get visited frequently by the who's-who of the field.

Best of luck with grad school! With that and getting married, it sounds like and exciting time of life.
