Physics Quote Of The Day. (Snap, Crackle, Pop?)

From Entropic Accelerating Universe:

I knew the 2nd derivative is acceleration and the 3rd derivative is jerk, but I've never heard of snap, crackle and pop!

Does anyone know if this is true, or did these authors just make this up?  If they did, they are very clever: it just may stick with the rest of the literature.

  1. I have never heard the last three terms as physical quantities, but I heartily approve.

  2. That's great. I also fully approve. Any suggestions on d^p x/dt^p for p>6? BTW, according to Wikipedia, the "Snap" is also known as the "Jounce". See also here and here.

  3. Bill, thanks for the references. I'll be working on the next three. (First thing to come to mind is hop skip jump, but I don't know that those would work...)

  4. That's better than anything I could come up with. The first things that came to mind were "shock" and "awe" (probably carrying negative connotations there) or, building off of the "jounce" terminology, "bounce" "trounce" "flounce" and "pounce" (of Tigger fame) (with an optional "jump" "bump" "clump" "thump" -- see 2nd verse).

  5. I've heard of snap, crackle, and pop. They're not often used, but the author's weren't making this up per se.

  6. on wolfram alpha, the distance derivatives are listed in order as: distance, velocity, acceleration, jerk, snap, crackle, pop. seems pretty legit to me. just look up m/s^x with x as 1 through 6
