This is what it's like arguing politics with my brother in law. It's not that he's an idiot, but that he's idiotically fanatical about his beliefs. I always walk away frustrated that he's beaten me with underhanded tactics.

Yeah, this is a real problem. I always get concerned when I see this happening.
When we argue politics we are often arguing about things that are effecting the lives of real people. Nevertheless, people often take an "ends justify the means" approach to politics. Soon, democracy is at the hands of arguments based on dishonesty, psychological tricks, equivocation, cherry picking facts, etc...
Personally, I remember the scene from Camelot. Lancelot was on trial for adultery. Unfortunately, at the time, such charges we decided by hand-to-hand combat. Since no one could beat him physically, he was always acquitted of the legal charges. In other words, just because you win doesn't mean you're right.
