Wireless Electricity Now Possible?

I'm sure many of you have heard about people trying to work on making wireless electricity a reality.  Just think about it, no more wires or batteries.

Well, here is a TED talk where wireless electricity is demonstrated.  I hope you enjoy it.

If anyone knows of other places wireless electricity is demonstrated please tell.

  1. That is incredibly cool! Probably quite expense but very cool nonetheless.
It would be interesting to see how (and if) this takes hold in the consumer market.

  2. It's interesting to me how hard it is to transmit electricity, given how easy it is to transfer electromagnetic radiation. I understand it's different, but on the other hand, it's all E&M.

  3. If I recall, MIT has been doing research on this for a number of years. At least 2 years ago I read an article in which they demonstrated it. It was very close proximity, and had lots of problems but it was cool nonetheless. I'll try to dig up the article.

What's interesting to me isn't that it's so hard to transmit, as you said it's just E&M, but that we don't want to cook everyone's internal organs with massive amounts of power in the air.

  4. "isn't that it's so hard to transmit"

jmb275, yeah, you make a good point here.

  5. There's been a lot of study on this going way back to Tesla.

From what I've heard there have been a lot of teams of late making some big breakthroughs on this. I believe though that a lot operate in the microwave region making them rather dangerous to say the least at large energy densities.

Of course if you want to freak out friends with wireless electricity bring a fluorescent tube around high voltage power lines at night.
