Eat, Drink, And Be Merry, For Tomorrow We Die

Being an LDS seminary graduate I can testify to the fact that one of the 100 most important phrases the church would have you memorize is "Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die".

The church goes to great lengths to help youth memorize such phrases. It turns out even the Dave Matthew's Band is glad to help the youth out. They even wrote the song below, Tripping Billies, to help us all remember "Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die".

I dedicate this post to all you seminary teachers out there. (You know who you are.)

  1. When I first heard this song I was quite shocked that the Dave Matthews Band was familiar with 2nd Nephi. Dave the Scriptorian just wasn't what came to mind when I thought of these guys.

It turns out that while this phrase never appears in the Bible, there are several similar phrases in the Old Testament and it has been a common saying since at lest the mid-19th century. I haven't yet found an example of it before the publication of the Book of Mormon, but I suspect Joseph Smith wasn't the first to say it.
