I agree. That has got to be about the best math song ever. I've had a copy of it for a few years now, but I'm glad it's re-surfaced. Thanks for the post.
Yeah, this song makes me so nostalgic. I really miss doing math from a "math department" prospective. True physicists are using things like Topology, Measure Theory, Group Theory, etc... more and more, but only learning those things from the math department allows you to fully appreciate that song.
True we throw around words in physics like manifold, two-form, subgroup, and lie algebra but *how I long to be* in a setting discussing things like the axiom of choice, homology and cohomology groups, being simply connected and Hausdorff.
However, I can still make those discussions happen! I'm around a lot of smart people, I just need to show them why pure math is a hobby they all need to indulge in every once and a while.
I don't hesitate to say that musing in pure math each day is as healthy for your overall well being as eating a good diet and gettomg plenty of exercise.
However, as much as I like pure math, doing nothing all day but proving theorems is not all I want to do. I'm glad I get to use math to understand nature!

I love that song. I first heard it about 5 years ago and it just made me laugh so hard. I think I'm still laughing from it.
ReplyDeleteKeith,
ReplyDeleteYeah, that song is hilarious.
