Descartes and The Merging of Physics and Mathematics

Today in my philosophy class we were talking about Descartes. Descartes' mentor, Isaac Beeckman, claimed Descartes had the remarkable ability to merge the fields of physics and mathematics.

When I heard this I was shocked. Could you imagine physics being separated from mathematics? It is amazing to me that such times existed. It then got me thinking, being a philosophy class and all, what other fields may merge with physics in the future which today we don't see coming, but in the future will seem completely obvious? Only time will tell.
