A Particle "Consistent with" the Higgs
This week, the
CERN collaboration announced the detection of a new particle consistent with the long-sought
Higgs boson. Both the
ATLAS and
CMS detectors detected a signal at between 125 and 126 GeV at 5 sigma. The people in charge are
naturally cautious. More data is necessary to positively identify the particle, but
this time, it certainly looks like the real thing!
Congratulations Particle Physicists!
Yes, congratulations for sure!
ReplyDeleteI had three different people ask me about this on Wednesday. It definitely has gotten people (outside of physics) talking about physics again.
ReplyDeleteDoes this mean the world won't end on December 21st after all?
