You may have heard about this, but there was a guy in Sweden who was arrested for building a nuclear reactor in his kitchen. From the sound of it, he didn't have a very big reactor since he was doing it on his stove top, but still...
Of course the media is flashing pictures of atom bomb tests and all kinds of terrible images along with this story, but I seriously don't think he could have done too much damage on a stove top (also, no word on the radiation levels, but just for a reference there is always xkcd).
I think the best part of the story is how he got the materials. In a interview with the BBC he said that he bought the stuff off of ebay! Now how's that for resourceful.
