New Commenting System. (Maybe)

I am trying an experiment.  I am adding a comment system to the blog that is supposed to have many more features that appear on the surface.  However, this is only an experiment and if it doesn't work we will go back to the old system.

Also, I can already see some bugs that, if they don't go away after a while, we will be going back for sure.

However, I would like everyone to be a good sport and give this system it's day in court.  Feel free to play around with the system on this thread and report feedback.

Thanks for your patience, but if this works out maybe we will be better off.

  1. For what's it worth, I hated the old system. The box for putting a comment in was short, skinny, and hard to write in. There's no way quote previous comment, etc. etc. I like this one much better.

  2. JS,

This system creates threads which may be inappropriate for most topics (except religious stuff!) you fellows post here. For 20 or less comments threads only clutter up the page, and, honestly, why waste photons for monilkers and unnecessary graphics. We posture with our thoughts, ideas, cool works at fairly advanced levels.

  3. Let us see if I can post as Ancient1!

  4. One nice thing is you can edit your comment if you make some typos! Something I struggle with. :)

  5. I agree - even though I use my real name I can see how that would be annoying.

  6. Yeah, I can't see any way of changing it as long as we use our google accounts.

  7. Sorry, let me revise that. I don't like that it uses my real name. I prefer my moniker.

  8. I think the new system looks great. It will take some getting used to, but it's good to plan ahead.

  9. Hmmm... Well, it wouldn't let me use my Google account. I guess there was an error. I also need to see how to fix some things on my Disqus profile. We'll see.

  10. Well, if everyone has a unique issue that isn't a good sign. I think you need to be signed into google before you use your Google account. Or it may be a cookies issue where somehow Disqus is being blocked from "seeing" you are logged into your Google account.

But regardless, it is a shame if things are always difficult for a different reason for each person. Good to know.

  11. I think I got it to work. It just took a little tweaking. (I think it was a cookie issue like you said.) Anyways, it seems to work fine now. Like I said, it will take some getting used to, but I still think it's a good step forward.

  12. I'm glad things worked out.

Also, under your "edit profile" you can change several things including the name you want to go by, website linked to, etc...

Just because your username is Bill_Evans under Disqus, doesn't mean that that is always how you have to be labeled. You can change your name to anything you want.

    Just so everyone knows.

  14. I like the threads in general.
BTW, Joseph, there is a downside to being able to edit your comments, and, FWIW, I generally would prefer not allowing people to edit them (or have some other mechanism to regulate that). Often times, particularly in a comment thread, someone replies to a statement, but if that statement is then edited or removed, the thread becomes nonsensical, and may be used to backtrack on things that were said.

Personally, I think we should treat a blog post or comment as "print" in that as soon as you click "submit" or "post," it's set in stone, and the only way to change what you said/are saying is to offer a redaction. I think this keeps people more honest, and encourages us to be more careful in what we say. Typos aren't worth correcting on a comment anyway IMHO as the point is usually the same.

However, in that vein, I just wanted to point out that above you kept spelling "moniker" as "monkier" which I thought made for a rather amusing twist on your comment.

  15. jmb275,

Thank you for being so diligent in your feedback. It has been very helpful! In understand your concern about people editing their comments but I make soooo many typos in so many egregious ways that parting with the edit feature is like parting with a loved one!

I will see if there is a way to make it so that there is only a small window of time to edit for fixing typos.

  16. Also, you may be interested in the fact that you cannot edit a comment any more after it has been replied to, from what I understand, to partially prevent what you are worried about.

  17. Okay, that does make me feel a bit better.

  18. 25 Comments and 1 Bag of Popcorn??? huh?

Ok, so I'm also just testing the image posting feature.

  19. Bill, congratulations! I was wondering who the first person to notice this was.

I can rename the "reactions" is the "X reactions" to whatever I want, and while I wait for inspiration, I decided to have some fun. :)

  20. Weird, it re-posted my image. It looks like Disqus remembers or forgets options at weird times. It's also strange that it truncates URLs. Oh well. It's still nice that you can still use standard HTML tags. Nice system.
