The BYU physics department, as I recall, did something like this in the early 90's albeit with much more primitive technology.

The nice thing about balloons for this is that there are far, far fewer regulations on them than rockets. (Especially post 9/11 where a bunch of ridiculous laws applying to rocketry were enacted)Clark Goblehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03876620613578404474noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4212234230338648875.post-58465969613655726332009-09-16T10:39:26.002-07:002009-09-16T10:39:26.002-07:00Here's the page where they talk about the hard...Here's the page where they talk about the hardware:
http://space.1337arts.com/hardwareJared Greenwaldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07409347148589869607noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4212234230338648875.post-61121049380355049352009-09-16T10:38:22.209-07:002009-09-16T10:38:22.209-07:00Jared, that is an interesting question. I saw that they downloaded different Firmware onto their camera but then did they have it on a timer just to take shots at regular intervals.

I am thinking about getting my own balloon and installing that firmware on my camera!Jared Greenwaldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07409347148589869607noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4212234230338648875.post-3368528860562807662009-09-14T14:35:20.081-07:002009-09-14T14:35:20.081-07:00I understand how they found it, but I'm more c...I understand how they found it, but I'm more curious as to how they got to where it landed. If it were released on the East coast I would expect it to end up somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean. They must have found somewhere that the wind was negligible and the trip must not have taken more than a few hours.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17367937708444729356noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4212234230338648875.post-16623603097968215742009-09-14T10:05:50.357-07:002009-09-14T10:05:50.357-07:00Nick, that's what the GPS-equipped cell phone ...Nick, that's what the GPS-equipped cell phone was for.
